Hope you’re having a splendid week! I’ve been asked several times to do a post on the supplements I’ve been taking lately…so, let’s dive right in with my personal favorite supplement – FISH OIL! Get it, dive right in…fish oil? Hilarious, I know!
I’ve been hooked on fish oil (pun intended…I’m on a freakin’ roll!) for a few years now after attending a training on it when I worked in the natural supplement field during college. Fish oil has a lot of different benefits –
I notice a significant improvement in my skin, my overall energy levels during my workouts and my stamina overall when I take fish oil compared to when I don’t. I can always tell when I slack in the fish oil department because my skin will get really dry, especially on my face and legs -two totally opposite areas, I know.
My favorite way to take fish oil is in Barlean’s liquid – some might think it’s too sweet, but I think it’s amazing added to cottage cheese, yogurt and even as an ice-cream topper. I signed up for their email program and receive coupons/promotions. When that kind of fish oil doesn’t quite fit into my budget (which happens QUITE often) I just stick to a generic brand – I know some people will argue about the quality of fish oil they’re getting, but I really need to stretch my dollar at this age and I figure I’m at least getting some benefits from the cheaper (and possibly lower-quality) fish oils. I supplement with flax and coconut oil as well! Coconut oil is my primary cooking oil and has a slew of amazing health benefits.
I also take maca capsules twice a day food. Since I’ve been taking maca I’ve noticed a huge difference in my hormonal breakouts, PMS symptoms and hormone balances in general in regards to side effects of my period and my cycle. It also gives me a good timely release of energy throughout the day. I think maca is all around my favorite supplement, ever. A lot of people take it for libido, so if you’re struggling in that aspect, it’d probably help!
As far as other supplements – I take a good b-complex, extra biotin (for hair, skin & nails,) “Blood Builder” (an iron supplement by Megafood) and a probiotic. I also take medicinal mushrooms (great for immunity!) Right now I use Host Defense Stamets 7 for medicinal mushrooms. This was a sample I got from a vendor at Whole Foods, typically I wouldn’t be able to afford this on a regular basis, so it’s a treat for my immune system during allergy season
I also take creatine on days that I lift, a preworkout (which I get from GNC, I switch it up every month or so..right now I’m just using their brand of preworkout – it was the most affordable and does the job.) I really love Vega’s sugar free pre workout as well for a more natural approach! Tastes delicious too; I like that it isn’t overly sweet and “chunky” when I mix it into water. Mmm I know, chunky preworkout…so good right?
As you can see, I take quite the little cocktail of supplements – but I don’t take ALL of them daily because if we’re being 100% honest here, I either a) forget or b) cannot afford to take every single supplement every single day. I’m lucky that I work at Whole Foods part time and sometimes am able to try out new supplements when vendors come in.
Oh and coffee…coffee everyday. Highly recommended.
I’d love to hear what supplements you take!
Peace and love!
